Blog #2 Week 3: Up, Up, & Away!
In week three of the project, it was about time for me to get started on actually wiring the projectors to the ports in the classrooms. I decided to use RLC as kind of a test run. I wasn't quite sure how to feel about going into this endeavor, so I asked Maheer for some help and a bit of guidance. I knew that Maheer had had experience with going into the ceilings in RLC and upper campus. He was very generous with his help and I very much so appreciated this from him. I knew that RLC would be different from the rest of campus because there were no data ports in the classroom, so I'd have to wire the projectors to the data closets. This activity proved to be tasking, more tasking than I originally thought. Running the wire was easy, but getting through the ceiling of the data closet was a bit of work that I did not expect. But once I got the hang of things, it was fine. It was actually kind of exciting going "Up, Up, &," into the ceilings of RLC to run the Ethernet cables. Doing the project work when I come into work helps me learn about the hardware side of what I am doing, but not too much about the software side. To aid in my learning about the software side of what I am doing, Harris recommended that I visit Professor Messer (professormesser.com) to learn more about the technology that I am handling. I haven't watched that many videos, but from what I've seen it's very informative and teaches me the proper terminology for the technology I am surrounded by every day. As for other aspects of the project, I decided not to make a schedule for the rest of upper campus and Leo yet, because I knew that the work done in RLC would not accurately help me gauge the amount of time needed for each room. Instead, I decided to wait until the beginning of week 4 to start Leo, once I've started I will have a more precise measurement of how long it will take me to do one classroom, the exact gear/tools that I will need and how much many power will be needed to get the job done.
